Meaning of Maha Mrutyunjaya Mantram


 

Om Trayambakam Yajamahe
Sugandhim Pushti Vardhanam
Urvarukamiva Bhandhanaat
Mrityor Muksheeya Maamritat

 
ओम् त्रयंबकम् यजामहे सुगंधिम् पुष्टि वर्धनम्
उर्वारुक मिव बन्धनात् मृत्योर् मुक्षीय मामृतात्

ōm trayaṁbakam yajāmahē sugaṁdhim puṣṭi vardhanam
urvāruka miva bandhanāt mr̥tyōr mukṣīya māmr̥tāt


Word to word meaningTryambakam = three-eyed; Yajamahe = worship; Sugandhim = beautiful smell/fragrance; Pushti = well nourished / prosperity; Vardhanam = one which increases; Urvarukam = cucumber; Iva = like; Bandhana = bondage /of worldly attachments; Mrtyor = mortality; Muksheeya = may you liberate; Ma- me; Amrit = nectar of immortality; Amritaat = for the sake of immortality.

MeaningI worship the three-eyed one, i.e. Lord Shiva, Who is fragrant and Who nourishes all beings;  may He liberate me from bondage or worldly attachments (death), for the sake of Immortality, just like how the cucmber is severed from vine to which it is attached.
