Word to word meaning:  *Saraswati = Goddess of knowledge.  NamaH = salutations / pay my respect; Tubhyam = to you;  Vara = boons / wishes; De = the giver; Kama =  wishes  or desires; Roopini = the embodiment or the form; Vidya = education / knowledge / learning / studies; Arambham = starting / begining / commencement;  Karishyami = undergoing / doing / performing; SiddhiH = accomplishment / achievement;  Bhavatu = let it be; Me = for me; Sada = always.

Meaning:
O! Goddess of knowledge, Saraswati, the giver of boons, the embodiment of fulfilling the wishes, my salutations to you.  I shall begin my education, and may there be always accomplishment for me.

*Saraswati is the consort (wife) of Lord Brahma, the creator.  She symbolizes all forms of knowledge which is the basic pursuit of human life.  This shloka is always recited before starting a class of education or learning.  The pursuit of learning is considered as a duty of every human being in Vedic culture. Saraswati holds Veena (stringed musical instrument) in her hands. So she is also known as Veenaadhari (the one holding Veenaa). She is also known as Vennaa Paani.  Paani = hands. Most of the Gods choose an animal as a vehicle.  Saraswati's vehicle (vaahan / vaahanam) is swan (hamsa).

  2. Hello Sury Garu,

It's a pleasure to always open your site to know the meanings of slokhas. But in the above slokha you have mentioned the vehicle of the goddess Saraswati is Mayuri(Peacock).

But in most of the times Goddess Saraswati has been portrayed on Hamsa(Swan).

Could you please enlighten us how she got peacock as vehicle

    Thanks,
    Anand

    1. Dear Anand garu, good catch sir. It has been almost seven years since I posted that. Somehow I did not get a chance to get back. I agree is that Swan is known to be the vahana. However, in some pictures a peacock is also shown. I may have picked up that picture inadvertently. Thanks for pointing out. I changed it now as per your suggestion. Namaste.
